Argentina Leads Latin America in English Proficiency

According to the 2025 EF EPI report, Argentina ranked first in Latin America for English proficiency, showing significant progress across all age groups. Buenos Aires entered the top 25 best cities in the world.

Argentina Leads Latin America in English Proficiency

Argentina continues to show high performance in English proficiency, ranking first in Latin America and consolidating its position as a leading country in English-language education. The results were published in the 2025 edition of the English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), the world's most extensive ranking of its kind, which measures the English skills of people worldwide by country, capital, and region. Argentina demonstrated consistent progress in mastering English, strengthening its potential for global integration and cultural connectivity, and establishing itself as a model for educational advancement. The country leads Latin America in 2025, followed by Honduras—both with a high level of English proficiency—while Uruguay, Paraguay, and El Salvador have a medium level. Among capital cities, Buenos Aires ranks 23rd globally and is the best in the region; Santiago, Tegucigalpa, Asunción, and Lima follow with lower but still high scores. The rest of the Latin American capitals are distributed between moderate and low levels. The improvement in Argentina was observed across all age groups, with outstanding performance among young adults. Notably, the 18-20 age group rebounded, reaching 540 points, indicating renewed interest in improving their English and surpassing previous years' levels. The 21-30 age group exceeded 600 points, while adults aged 31-40 maintained solid levels close to 580. Those over 41 stabilized around 530 points, showing more modest progress. In terms of gender equity, Argentina stands out from the general trend in Latin America. While gender gaps favoring men persist in the region, in Argentina, women achieve equal or superior performance, reflecting significant progress toward equity and consolidating a positive example in the region. Nationally, Mar del Plata tops the ranking, followed by the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and Bahía Blanca, cementing their positions as centers of excellence in English. Completing the top 5 are Rosario and La Plata. Additionally, several cities showed significant growth compared to the previous year: San Juan and San Luis, for example, recorded improvements of up to 22 points, narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest-performing cities. Global Ranking Once again, the Netherlands maintains the top spot, this time followed by Croatia and Austria, both of which improved their positions. In a context of decreasing global complexity, their role as a common bridge between cultures, economies, and ideas is more important than ever," Kate Bell also highlights. The Most Used Language English continues to be the most common language used in international communication. Despite global tensions, its value as a tool for connection in an interdependent world is unquestionable. The EPI results underscore the importance of language learning as a key tool for personal and professional development. The demand for English courses and language acquisition programs has not diminished, nor has investment by companies and governments in developing English skills. Global Provider of Immersive Cultural Education EF Education First (EF), a global provider of immersive cultural education, has conducted the study since 2011, linking language to variables such as economic development, education investment, gender equity, and others. Back then, it covered 44 countries, and in this 2025 edition, the test was administered in 123 nations—seven more than last year—reaching over 2.2 million men and women worldwide. This was made possible by the use of the EF SET, an adaptive and standardized online test with objective scoring. The test classifies language skills according to the six levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). For the first time, speaking and writing skills were also evaluated using artificial intelligence technology developed by Efekta Education Group, a technology company derived from EF dedicated to improving learning outcomes at scale.
